I am still weak at the knees. Takashi Murakami(!), one of our times greatest living artists, contacted me (again!!!) to arrange flowers for MARK RYDEN's gallery opening! Nothing makes me more excited and NOTHING makes me freak out more than making a flower arrangement for an artist that I love and respect. Dubbed the god-father of pop surrealism, Ryden is also one of my all time favorite artists.
So to the flowers for the gallery opening… after calming down a bit, and after some serious debating, we decided to use his painting Aurora as our inspiration. We love the colors (or perhaps the lack of colors depending on how you see it) and we love the contrast between light and dark in this piece. Hence the light flowers coming out of the dark foliage + soil = dirt which we used instead of a vase (well ok, we also put the dirt on a zink tray…). In addition, we foraged a few ingredients, such as various sized dried pods, to add extra texture… and also because we always love adding something weird to our arrangements.
The stunning 9 foot painting Aurora is on view at the Paul Kasmin gallery from December 10, 2015 to January 23, 2016.
The flowers are on view… below.
